Primary Dutch Bilingual

Thematic work

The Bilingual Department at ISE works thematically. This means that we choose themes and create lessons accordingly, in collaboration between the Dutch and English teachers. Our curriculum is based on characteristics of child development in the preschool phase. Within our groups we work on the principle that a rich learning environment supports the broad development of the child. To this end, it is important to work together with the children on each theme to build the learning environment. The learning wall offers the children insight into their own learning process and you as a parent a nice view of what is going on in the classroom

Morning Circle

In the circle we open the day with stories and songs. During circle time we have circle discussions, read aloud and play all kinds of games concerning math and language.

Drama is also covered and singing, with or without instruments. The teacher also provides instruction from the circle on the planned play/work lesson.

Playing and working
During play/work, children are invited to engage in various activities and play-learning areas. In addition, creative tasks or tasks with developmental materials are also offered. In the group there are several fixed play-learning areas and cabinets with developmental materials. The different playgrounds match the current theme.

Auditorium and Gym
Preschoolers need lots of exercise. There is room in the schedule for that daily. We sometimes make use of the auditorium during the school day. This may be due to less good weather, but we also build in specifically chosen moments. Every week all kindergarten groups receive a gym lesson from our specialist teacher.

Playing Outside
Whenever weather conditions permit outside play, we do so daily in the morning and in the afternoon on our playground. Playing together with carts, on the swing, jumping rope with the teacher or playing delightful role-play provides preschoolers with opportunities for development in many areas.

In the Dutch Bilingual Department, 70% of lessons are taught in Dutch, and 30% in English. In group 1/2 the language of instruction is Dutch on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning, but if explanations in English are needed, we do that. On Thursday afternoon and Friday, we reverse that; the language of instruction is English.

In groups 3 to 8 the students receive 3 EFL lessons per week from our EFL teachers. Sports lessons are also taught in English and the classroom teachers use English in specific lessons, in connection with the themes. Our EFL teachers also offer support for students who need extra support in English.

In the Bilingual Department at ISE, we work with the children on the basic subjects (language/reading/ math/spelling/writing) and work thematically with All in 1. We find it important that in every group sufficient time is spent on the basic subjects. Each year we look at what time a group needs for a particular subject.

We work with the following approaches and methods:

Reading:       Veilig Leren Lezen

Math:          Getal & Ruimte Junior

Language : Alles in 1 & Alles Apart

Spelling:     Alles in 1 & Alles Apart

Writing:      Pennenstreken (group 3/4 and Handschrift (group 5 – 8)

English:    KS 1 English, KS 2 English, KS3 English

Traffic:        Veilig Verkeer Nederland (Digital lessons).

We use our methods to achieve the (intermediate and final) goals. The teachers always look critically at the offerings from the method and have the freedom to deviate from them.

Alles in 1 (All in 1)
In worldly life, everything is connected. At Alles-in-1 we do just that: we learn, experience and experience world orientation, language and reading in logical connection. Scientific research has amply demonstrated the great value of language linked to world orientation. With the concept and the educational tools of Alles-in-1 we give students the optimal opportunities to develop themselves and we ourselves as teachers are the directors of the education that fits our students.
