Student Council initiative

Bottle Initiative
The “Bottle Initiative” was introduced by our student council to collect the refundable (statiegeld) bottles and exchange them for money. This way we encourage recycling, and keep our oceans, rivers, beaches clean, and help fundraising for a charity called Mary’s Meals. This charity provides meals to poor children in other countries.

The Buddy Bench
Be a friend, Make a friend

Are you looking for a friend? We know it can be difficult to make new friends when you are new in a school, it can be even more difficult if you are not speaking the same languages yet. This is why we have two buddy benches at our school’s playgrounds (designed by our Primary Student Council and donated by our Parents’ Committee). When someone asks you to play, join them, and always remember to glance over at the school’s Buddy Benches to invite new friends or if you are feeling lonely, sit on the bench and play with the first person who invites you. That way you can make lots of new friends.

Maria Dávila Chamorro
Primary International student
Speaks Spanish, English, Dutch

Hola! My name is Maria. I moved here a year ago from Madrid, Spain. I am 8 years old. I would like to be an artist, dancer or roller skating teacher. My favourite subject is Maths. I like learning multiplication, addition, subtraction and everything about Maths.

MY TIP TO NEW STUDENTS AT THE ISE:
My buddy helped me to feel comfortable and happy when I first started at the ISE. If you are new to the school, and you are feeling lonely, you can sit on one of the buddy benches in the playground, and I can be your buddy, speak in Spanish with you, show you where to go and play with you so you can feel at home and happy, too.

The ISE primary student council is made up of students from groups 6,7 & 8 from both the International and Bilingual Dutch departments. These students are elected by students and will be a representative for 2-3 years.

They are responsible for projects that will enhance school life, such as the Caring Wolfcub (in collaboration with the Secondary Kindness Club) or Creative Chameleon week. They guide new students with their parents around our beautiful campus. They meet twice a month to discuss their existing ideas or ideas for new projects and since this year, they are collaborating more closely with the Secondary Student Council to emphasise our school’s vision of being ‘one school’.

At the start of each school year the secondary students hand in a letter of motivation if they would like to join the Student Council. The current president and vice president of the Student Council hold interviews after reading these letters and consider strengths/weaknesses of each candidate.

DP1 students, from the previous year’s student council act as advisors. MP5 students have leading roles. The elected MP1 to 4 students have possibilities throughout the year to take on a leading role in initiatives.

The student council works on a diversity of projects, some examples of previous initiatives are: the bottles initiative, the buddy bench and the lost and found system. They are currently working on a spirit week for the whole school.

Students that are not members of the student council can put forward ideas as well.

The representatives of each year group make sure to convey or receive (i.e. problems or any suggestions) messages across their year groups. They also have to take part in different initiatives of the student council and help in any way possible.

The students can use this email if they want to send an idea in or if they want to improve something within the school.
